   8 It must have been during a rehearsal of the EJE (Eindhoven Youth
   9 Orchestra), somewhere in 1995 that Jan, one of the cranked violists
  10 told Han-Wen, one of the distorted French horn players, about the
  11 grand new project he was working on.  It was an automated system for
  12 printing music (to be precise, it was MPP, a preprocessor for
  13 MusiXTeX).  As it happened, Han-Wen accidentally wanted to print out
  14 some parts from a score, so he started looking at the software, and he
  15 quickly got hooked.  It was decided that MPP was a dead end.  After
  16 lots of philosophizing and heated email exchanges Han-Wen started
  17 LilyPond in 1996.  This time, Jan got sucked into Han-Wen's new
  18 project.

  20 In some ways, developing a computer program is like learning to play
  21 an instrument.  In the beginning, discovering how it works is fun, and
  22 the things you cannot do are challenging.  After the initial excitement,
  23 you have to practice and practice.  Scales and studies can be dull, and
  24 if you are not motivated by others---teachers, conductors or
  25 audience---it is very tempting to give up.  You continue, and gradually
  26 playing becomes a part of your life.  Some days it comes naturally, and
  27 it is wonderful, and on some days it just does not work, but you keep
  28 playing, day after day.

  30 Like making music, working on LilyPond can be dull work, and on
  31 some days it feels like plodding through a morass of bugs.
  32 Nevertheless, it has become a part of our life, and we keep doing it.
  33 Probably the most important motivation is that our program actually
  34 does something useful for people.  When we browse around the net we
  35 find many people that use LilyPond, and produce impressive pieces of
  36 sheet music.  Seeing that feels unreal, but in a very pleasant way.

  38 Our users not only give us good vibes by using our program, many of
  39 them also help us by giving suggestions and sending bug reports, so we
  40 would like to thank all users that sent us bug reports, gave
  41 suggestions or contributed in any other way to LilyPond.

  43 Playing and printing music is more than nice analogy.  Programming
  44 together is a lot of fun, and helping people is deeply satisfying, but
  45 ultimately, working on LilyPond is a way to express our deep love for
  46 music.  May it help you create lots of beautiful music!

  59 The most important developments in 3.0 are related.  In LilyPond 3.0,
  60 @TeX{} is no longer strictly necessary to engrave music.  This is
  61 because LilyPond can now also layout pages and determine page breaks.

  63 further compared to previous versions.
