14 Before you make any comments on these changes, please read the entire
15 FHS document. Many of these changes are interdependent or are due to
16 factors outside of our control. The rationale for all of these
17 changes is located in the FHS document.
21 Major Technical Changes (i.e., most, but not all of them)
24 <TT>/var/lib</TT> restored (briefly, it was not reasonable to
25 relocate it to /var/state)
27 <TT>/var/state</TT> removed
29 Distributions may install software in <TT>/opt</TT>, but may
30 not modify or delete software locally installed without the assent
31 of the local system administrator.
33 <TT>/usr/X386</TT> is no longer mentioned.
35 <TT>/var/mail</TT> is still the location that applications should
36 access for the mail spool. However, it does not have to be physically
39 some really old symbolic links have been removed
41 <TT>/var/spool/smail</TT> is no longer explicitly mentioned
47 Various formatting, grammar, and typographical fixes.
